As an important technological tool for teaching geography, the hardware and software systems used to store, search, map and analyze geographic data are analyzed. Also, in accordance with the purpose of the study, the level of use of information technology in the curriculum and in the process of teaching school geography in the Republic of Kazakhstan was determined. The results of the study were determined by the survey method. The survey was conducted among geography teachers. 133 teachers from different regions and cities of the Republic of Kazakhstan voluntarily took part in the survey, and it turned out that 86.8 % of them know about GIS. In addition, it turned out that 12.8 % of school teachers have MapInfo programs, 21.8 % - ArcGIS, 25.6 % - QGIS, 15.4 % - EduGIS, 6.4 % - Arc-Explorer, 16.7 % - OpenStreetMap and 1.3 % - OpenJUMP. To analyze the survey data, teachers were divided into two groups: teachers who conducted classes based on GIS in the 2021-2022 academic year (64.2 %) and teachers who did not conduct classes based on GIS (not working with GIS) (35.8 %). To the question about the frequency of classes by teachers using GIS, 14.6 % answered that the teacher taught “one” lesson, 12.2 % - “two”, 8.9% - “three” and “four”, 19.5 % - “five or more” lessons. According to the survey results, 50.4 % of teachers learned how to use GIS via the Internet (Google, YouTube, Instagram, etc.), and 26 % - through professional development courses. Also, 55.3 % of teachers showed experience in using GIS in teaching geography for 1-4 years, 12.2 % - 5-9 years, 2.4 % - 10 or more years, but the proportion of those who do not use GIS during classes was 30.1 %. Therefore, the learning goals and the long-term learning plan (calendar-thematic planning) in the model curricula of 9th, 10th and 11th grades of the Republic of Kazakhstan were analyzed. As a result, a number of obstacles to the use of GIS in teaching school geography were named: lack of necessary programs as the main reason; lack of experience in using GIS; lack of time and complexity of GIS programs.</p> ER -
